Students Want U of C to Divest From Sudan

In honor of a national Darfur Action Week, University of Chicago students are demanding that the school reconsider its decision not to pull investments out of Sudan.
The students are planning various protests this week. Around thirty of them staged a day-long "study-in" on Friday outside the office of President Robert Zimmer.
Senior Miranda Nelson spoke from inside the building.
Nelson: And our goal is just to be a presence all day, to remind the president that a genocide is ongoing. We just wanted to tell the University that we didn't agree with its decision and that we want that overturned. In February, the students tried unsuccessfully to push the administration to divest from Sudan due to concerns about genocide in its Darfur region.
The students say part of the University's endowment is invested in mutual funds linked to the Sudanese government.
The administration argued that it was inappropriate for the school to take a political stand.
A University spokesman says Zimmer has offered to meet with the students.
